CNET Channel is looking for a talented, energetic, self-motivated, and detail-oriented system and database administrator to join our Irvine-based Engineering and Operations team. The Irvine team is responsible for all customer-facing applications and products from CNET Channel, including its top two products, DataSource™ and ChannelOnline™. This position offers the opportunity for the right individual to make a critical and pivotal contribution by managing the 24/7 production infrastructure of these two products and defining the technology platform of the premier product data delivery company on the Internet.

Our environment consists of over 80 Linux servers functioning as web, application and database servers.  They run Oracle, MySQL, Veritas HA Cluster, TIBCO EMS and BusinessWorks, Glassfish, Resin, Apache, Java, Perl, Lucene, SOLR, Hyperic, Big Brother.  You will share responsibility for all aspects of system and database administration, including the 24/7 availability of all services to our enterprise customers, with one other senior administrator.

 

As a senior system and database administrator, you will be responsible for administering and maintaining CNET Channel’s data center systems and development environment.  This will include hardware, software, database, and network and Internet connectivity of all systems and servers. Your duties will include installation, configuration, diagnosis, troubleshooting, monitoring, support, administration and documentation. You will define, design, and implement solutions and system enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the system. Managing a variety of processes and scripts that execute on the servers and writing scripts to execute administration tasks and balance system utilization will be part of your duties. You will define database indexes and act as a resource to members of the development staff for optimization of SQL queries. You will manage the load configuration of all servers and make recommendations for purchase or upgrade of hardware. You will coordinate capacity and system planning, installation, monitoring, testing, and servicing. You must be a proven “self starter” possessing proven breadth and depth of technical expertise, skills and abilities to meet objectives on both routine and out of the ordinary system and database administration assignments.



Experience/Skills
  1. Has demonstrated mastery of the MySQL (version 5.0 and 5.1) database environment and MySQL administration in a large-scale MySQL installation.
  2. Has demonstrated mastery of both MyISAM and InnoDB tables.
  3. Has extensive knowledge of the MySQL processes and queries, and performance optimization strategies.
  4. Has a solid understanding of MySQL backup and recovery strategies, and MySQL replication.
  5. Has demonstrated mastery of the Linux operating system and its environments, and has extensive experience managing a large-scale Linux server farm.
  6. Has demonstrated mastery of Veritas HA cluster and its use in database failover.
  7. Has demonstrated mastery of the use, operations and considerations of Storage Area Networks and Network Attach Storage.
  8. Has demonstrated mastery of server monitoring solutions.
  9. Has demonstrated mastery of Glassfish and Apache.
  10. Has a solid understanding of networking concepts and operations.
  11. Knowledge of TIBCO EMS and BusinessWorks is preferred.
  12. Has an understanding of the fundamentals of computer science and software engineering, such as object-oriented design, encapsulation, modularity, software lifecycles, distributed systems, inter-process communication, messaging buses, event models, and scalability.
  13. Has demonstrated mastery of Perl scripting.
  14. Has an understanding of Java, HTML and XML in a Linux environment.
  15. Must have strong analytical abilities.
  16. Is familiar with and comfortable in an Agile development environment.
  17. Shows excellent judgment in decision-making, especially in high-stress situations where actions directly effect user experience and customer satisfaction.
  18. Shows solid judgment in decision-making when working with others, and working with management.
  19. Thinks strategically about CNET's technical direction and makes sound technical decisions and is able to weigh tradeoffs of timeliness, quality, scalability, flexibility, and maintainability.

  23. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent training and experience, and 6 years professional system and database administration experience; or a Master of Science and 4 years experience, with 3 years of experience as a Linux system administrator and 3 years as a MySQL DBA.

 

Required: Experience in MySQL (MyISAM and InnoDB) and Linux (Red Hat) administration, Veritas HA Cluster, Glassfish, Apache, Perl, NAS/SAN. Understanding of Java, JDBC, XML, HTML/JSP/JSF/JavaScript

Preferred: TIBCO EMS and BusinessWorks, Glassfish, Sun DSEE, Data Warehousing, ETL, SOLR, Lucene, Portal

Pluses: Perforce, Jira, Confluence
