We are Juice Wireless, a 3.5 year old start up based in Los Angeles, California.  We make JuiceCaster (www.juicecaster.com).  JuiceCaster is an award winning mobile social broadcasting utility.   JuiceCaster lets you post pictures and videos right from your camera phone to your online pages on sites such as MySpace and Facebook and directly to other mobile phone users.  You can also watch, rate and comment on the latest videos right from your phone.  Use JuiceCaster to stay in touch with current friends and make new ones.  JuiceCaster is available across multiple platforms, including mobile application, WAP site, Flash widget for websites, and Windows desktop application.

We take our work very seriously and have fun doing so.  If you want to work hard, be incredibly productive and have fun working with a small group of high-energy people, this is the place for you.  This is a unique opportunity for someone who has a strong desire to help define and make an impact on the future of mobile social media and networking.

About the position

We are seeking a senior level PHP architect with extensive knowledge in PHP, MySql, and Unix who can help lead our technology team to the next level.

The ideal candidate should have the following expertise:

  • Experience building large scale PHP based applications.  These aren't the kinds of websites you build on your own on evenings and weekends, but the kind that attract and support thousands of simultaneous users with multiple servers for redundancy and scalability.  Think sites like yahoo, google, youtube, myspace, and friendster written in PHP.

  • Experience with scaling large infrastructures.  You should be able to lead and architect a solution involving multiple firewalls, load balancers, web servers, application servers, database servers, and various additional servers.  High Availability is key so if one server (or two) goes down, the system should stay up.  If we want to increase capacity, we should be able to install and configure a server in minutes, not hours.  Security is key so the architecture should pass all security audits.

  • Experience with mysql.  You should be able to configure and install mysql in a standard *NIX environment.  You should be familiar with things such as my.cnf, slow query logs, query caching, mytop, etc.  In SQL, you should know the difference between left join and outer join, why subqueries are not recommended, etc.  You should be able to write queries to extract data from 8 different tables all joined in various ways without breaking a sweat.  You should be well versed in database server replication, master-slave database replication, circular multi-master replication, etc.

  • Experience leading a team.  You should have experience working together with developers to ensure the job gets done.  Take the initiative!  You need to be able to drive projects to completion working directly with the developers, project managers, and high level executives.  The deadlines are aggressive and the job needs to be done on time no matter what.

  • High level experience with varying technologies ranging from Java and C++ to XML / HTML / CSS / Javascript to RAID / FREEBSD / etc.  You should know about standards, how these technologies work together and how they improve or impact our systems.  You may need to dive into a specific technology to help with development so a basic foundation is required and the ability to quickly learn a new technology is imperative.  If a new technology becomes available, you should be able to read some documentation and quickly learn the details and have the skills to apply that knowledge to our application.

  • A BS in Computer Science from a major 4 year university.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience.

This candidate will be a key part of the technical team!  You will not only help design and architect our future solutions -- you will also be getting your hands dirty actually building our next generation products.  This is an exciting job for a highly motivated and extremely sharp individual.  Compensation is competitive including stock options.  Relocation reimbursement and/or Visa Sponsorship are also possible.

To apply, send resume, introduction letter and salary requirements to jobs@juicewireless.com .  Subject line of email must read “PHP Developer.”
